Getting to Know the 21 Taras

Tara is the ”Mother of all the Buddhas” and she represents supreme matriarchal energy and

bliss. Many people throughout the world turn to Tara for help as she is known as the “swift liberator” bringing relief to those who make prayers for money, love, children and health. Tara is also known for quick action completion.

Tara manifests in different forms, colours and postures according to the specific needs. The most well known are the 21 emanations of TARA that are so popular with Tibetan Buddhists. Each Tara uses a unique set of implements and exercises specific powers that accomplish distinct enlightening effects.

Taras with White Bodies Pacify Illness & Anger: White Taras specialize in pacifying sickness, eliminating poisons and preventing untimely death. Those wishing for good health can turn to White Tara for help.

Taras with Yellow-Gold Bodies Bring Auspicious Good Fortune: Yellow Taras bring wealth, eliminate poverty and transform you into a generous person. Those who need financial help can invite Yellow Taras into their home and make offerings to her.

Taras with Red Bodies Bring Power: Red Taras bring authority and attraction, helping those in business and managerial roles to overcome their own negativities, empowering their natures to benefit others.

Taras with Black Bodies Subdue Evil: There are two black Taras who appear in the wrathful aspect of Tara. Both are extremely powerful and use forceful means to subdue evil spells that are sent your way.

In her compassionate form Tara appears in four colours, generally with one face and two arms. Her right hand holds a vase for accomplishing various activities and her left hand is usually depicted holding the lotus flower.

In her Tantric form, Tara appears in a variety of postures and facial expressions. She has more than two arms and her hands are seen holding powerful implements or weapons to pacify, empower, control or subdue evil. The tantric forms of Tara are very rare and precious.

Consider inviting Green Tara and all 21 Taras into your home. Invoke her presence by offering fresh bowls of water, flowers, incense, food and lights every day. You may also recite her mantra to benefit yourself, your family and all sentient beings.

As you know, I have been paying tribute to Mother Tara for many years. Several years ago, at our first course on Tibetan Cosmic Magic here in KL, I introduced the students to the 21 Tara Oracle or “Mo”.
