When was the last time you really laughed? I mean a good belly laugh with family or friends. Did you know that on average children laugh 150 times a day…but adults only 3 or 4? Have you ever laughed and not been able to stop? What a wonderful stress release! Maybe we’re taking ourselves a little too seriously these days. It’s time to laugh more often!

You’ve heard the old expression: Laughter is the best medicine! This is certainly true because it can and does improve your health. It strengthens the immune system and even helps to slow down the aging process. Here’s another benefit –it works quickly to relax you, remove stress, increase blood flow and triggers release of those magical endorphins in the body that make you feel good. It helps to decrease pain because when you laugh your muscles automatically relax. Laughing makes you feel GOOD – unless you laugh so hard that your tummy hurts. And best of all? It’s FREE and not too hard to do.

Feeling angry or hurt? Nothing dulls the sting of anger or resentment quicker than sharing a joke and laughing together. After all, how can you feel angry when you’re laughing? Yes, laughter is a very powerful medicine in many ways. It’s even good to laugh at ourselves - because we all do silly or stupid things once in a while.

But here’s the real magic. It becomes even more special and beneficial when you share your laughter and your happiness with others. Smiling at others, for example, not only makes you feel better, it makes the person you are talking with or smiling at feel great too. Why not begin smiling more today? Smile as you pass someone on the way to work, as you order your morning coffee or tea and even at someone in the elevator. I promise you will be amazed at what happens.

We all have problems – some of us are in more difficult situations than others right now. That makes it even more important to lighten up and be joyful again. We all have something to be thankful for and happy about. Make this your best year and bring laughter and happiness back into your life and into the lives of others.
