Tsai Shen Yeh Chinese God of Wealth

Tsai Shen Yeh is a popular prosperity deity often depicted sitting on a dragon and wearing elaborate dragon robes. There is usually a magnificent full-frontal dragon on the front of his robe and in his right hand he carries a symbolic ingot of gold and a bundle of gold coins tied with red thread (indicating yang energy). In his left arm is a staff with precious symbols. His countenance is fierce but not threatening. You can find many manifestations of this popular deity – some sitting on the tiger, others standing. When his image is placed in your home, it is believed to bring the chi of wealth and prosperity.

Tsia Shen Yeh – the God of Wealth

History: The generally accepted story of the origin of Tsai Shen Yeh dates back to the Chou dynasty. He is depicted as a hero who fought on the side of the last of the Shang emperors in the second millennium B.C. There are tales of his wonderful feats of endurance and bravery such as riding a black tiger and throwing pearls at his enemies that exploded like firebombs. It seems he was eventually defeated by black magic which sent him into the netherworld of spirits where he remained until finally released. By this time, his feats of bravery were legendary, and he was venerated as Head of the Ministry of Riches and Prosperity. Over the centuries he became worshipped as the God of Wealth.
