What Do the Colours Mean?

 

In feng shui we usually associate the colours with the five elements. However, they also represent sacred energies associated with deities, worldly gods and celestial realms.

	WHITE:  This is the colour of appeasement.  It is the sum of all colours and can pacify your mood.  It is the colour of metal and indicates the patriarch, the leader who holds power and authority.  The gemstone is the hard diamond or zirconia.  If you have an important meeting to attend, wear white!
	YELLOW:  This colour of the sunshine represents increase. It is a yang in nature and brings new wealth and success into your life.  It signifies the earth element and symbolizes jewels that ring prosperity.  The yellow sapphire is the gemstone associated with this colour.
	RED:  Red is the controlling colour that can subdue hostile energies.  Always considered an auspicious colour associated with good fortune and celebration, it is a magnetizing colour.  It also signifies passion, love, and marriage. It signifies the fire element and the gemstone associated with it is the ruby.
	BLACK:  This colour represents the ultimate yin energy and is subduing in nature.  It is associated with the chi of the night and gives accent and power to all colours.  It is considered the ultimate colour of the destruction of all evil and gives spiritual strength of a celestial nature.  Its element is water, and its forces can be dark and powerful.
	BLUE:  Blue is also the colour of water, but not as strong as black.  It brings soothing and calmness to the soul. It represents new beginnings, and its gemstone is the inspiring blue sapphire.
	GREEN:  It is the colour of new growth and represents the element of wood.  While dark green represents the energy of old wood, light green is soft like the grass.  The gemstone is the brilliant emerald which brings you fresh success.  Wood is the only living element of the five elements.
	ORANGE:  Wear orange for happiness and hope.  It also represents asset wealth.  You must not have too much of this colour around as it can subdue the good qualities of all the other colours.
	BROWN: This is the colour of “old wood”, suggesting strength, stability, and experience.  It is also considered a colour of security so you can use it to keep your home safe and sound.
	PURPLE:  Purple is the colour representing immense good fortune and completion.  It signifies both fire and ice, so in terms of elements it combines fire with water bringing steam and hence its power.  When you pair this colour with silver it brings money luck and when you pair it with gold it brings wealth.  Royalty often combines these two colours.
