Important Rules For Staircase Feng Shui

The staircase in your home is where the chi moves from one level to the next.

Good staircase feng shui distributes good fortune to all residents, thus it is important to assess your staircase feng shui and ensure that there are no negative issues.

1. Staircase should never face a door. If your staircase faces your front door (when you open your front door you are facing a staircase), then place a screen or divider between the stairs and the door. If you cannot do this, turn the last three steps of the staircase to face another direction. If this is not possible, install a very bright and elaborate light (like a crystal chandelier) in the entry space between the door and staircase to slow down the chi before it moves up the staircase.

2. The staircase should not directly face a bedroom door. At the top of the staircase, the same principle applies – staircase should not hit a bedroom door. If this is the case, the bright light remedy will also work here.

Open spaces between
stairs brings money loss

3. Staircase should not have “holes” between the steps: This suggests a leak in your wealth and income. This applies to stairs outside the home and inside as well. Repair with plywood or carpet. When there is firmness and the staircase looks solid, the chi that flows is also strong: HINT: Wood is the element that represents growth, so a wooden staircase is an excellent choice.

Gently curving staircases
create good flow of chi

4. Curved or straight staircases? Gently broad-curving staircases are best as they allow the chi to flow auspiciously. Note: Spiral staircases are not the same as curved staircases and are not considered good feng shui as they are symbolic of a corkscrew cutting through the home. If your staircase is very steep and/or straight the chi will gather speed and move too quickly, creating shar chi or “killing chi.” If your staircase is in the center of the home, it is even more important to slow down the chi. If possible, don’t locate your staircase near the center of the home or facing the front door.

Use light when
staircase is narrow

5. Narrow Staircases: These require good lighting and should be kept bright and attractive, so the chi flows easily. You can also hang a picture of a protector image like Chung Kwei or Kan Kung at the bottom of the stairs to create protective chi here. Some people like to place two small images of chi lin or fu dog by either side of the stairs.

6. Under the Staircase: This space under the staircase should not be empty, so why not use it for storage. However, do not place things that represent the family wealth or your children’s schoolbooks under the stairs. You do not want to continually step on your wealth or your child’s success. Water under the staircase hurts the second generation, so this is NOT the place for a water feature or small fountain.

When the condition of your staircase causes the movement of chi to be afflicted, it promotes illness, robbery and loss that affects the entire family. Do be careful not to take the simple staircase for granted!
