Why Are the Ghosts Hungry? Here’s How to Help

Hungry Ghosts are described as “hungry” because by their nature they cannot eat

or drink in the ordinary way.  The only way that they can be “fed” is through their sense of smell and they become really happy and appeased when incense or other special food aromas are offered to them.

While it is hard for us to imagine, just think how desperate these unfortunate souls must be – trapped between realms and constantly suffering from extreme deprivation.  It is not surprising, when left in this unappeased state, that they begin to cause trouble and take advantage of those whose chi energy is low and life force is weak.  That’s why it is so vital to perform the incense appeasement ritual and make offerings during Hungry Ghost Month.

Incense Offering Ritual:  This is an extremely powerful way to remove obstacles caused by wandering and local spirits of the land.  It is normally done 2-3 times per week but during hungry ghost month my recommendation is to do this every evening.  The best time to do this is just after sunset.

Light up some sweet-smelling incense (like Kemeyen or Sandlewood) and chant the offering mantra as you walk clockwise around the rooms inside your home and office and then outside your home as well.  Carry your incense burner with you as you walk.  When you are finished, dedicate the incense and the offerings to the holy beings, dakinis, angels, spiritual protectors, local landlords and wandering spirits around you.  Ask them to look after you and not to bring any harm your way.  Let the incense burn out completely.

Here is the mantra to chant as you walk, burning the incense:

“Namah Sarva Tathagatha Avalokite
Om Sambhara, Sambhara Hung”

It's a good idea to offer incense on a regular basis to the local spirits and protectors and not just during Hungry Ghost Month.  If you are launching a new project or have an important meeting or court case or moving into a new house, you can do this incense offering.

Consider the spirits your friends and do not be afraid.
