How Superstitious Are You?

Image:
Let’s face it, we’re probably all just a little superstitious.  Many of us trust our luck to old
belief systems and ways of doing things that often defy common sense.  After all, it doesn’t require much effort and why risk bringing bad luck your way if you can avoid it?  Here are a few superstitions centering around money and wealth that may be worth considering.

Itchy Palm Means Money is Coming:  However, according to some explanations, it depends which palm is itchy. If it’s your right palm, then you can rest assured money is on the way – but don’t scratch that itch or you won’t receive the money.  If you left hand is itchy, you are about to lose money.  Rub your left palm on a piece of wood and you’ll be ok.

Protect Your Money Luck:  If you own a shop, don’t sit on the counter where the cash register is located.  In the same way, never sit on a table that has you safe or important documents inside.

Red Envelope Should Contain an Even Number of Dollars: It’s considered very inauspicious to place odd numbered amounts of cash inside a red envelope or angpow.  For weddings and happy occasions always gift even numbered amounts of cash and better still it should end in the digit 8 – like 168 or 188.  Note that odd number money is said to signify death.

Bird Droppings:  Is getting pooped on by a bird good luck?  Many people think so.  In fact, some believe that it signifies real wealth on the way.

Put Money in a Purse or Wallet:  If you are giving someone a gift of a wallet or purse, be sure to put some money inside.  After all, money attracts money so any amount will do – it doesn’t have to be lot.  If you can add new money, that’s even better.  And the same applies to your bank account – it should never be emptied completely.

Money out the door!
Never place you bag on the floor – an old Chinese proverb: “A purse on the floor is money out the door.”  A bag on the ground brings bad money luck, including purse snatching thieves.  Elevate your wealth luck by keeping your purse above ground.

Meeting a funeral:  If you meet a funeral procession on your way to work, it symbolizes big success coming to you in your career – a promotion on the way.  It is believed that the coffin will take away all your bad luck, leaving you only with good fortune!

Don’t Step on the Doorway Threshold:  Never step on the threshold of any doorway in your home. It is believed that the threshold is the pulse point of the home and stepping on it destroys its essence and spirit.  Some believe that the threshold is placed at a doorway to prevent wandering spirits from entering since they are unable to cross the threshold.  If you step on the threshold, you are symbolically “breaking” the protection of the home.

Pick Up A Lucky Penny:  If you find a penny and it is heads up – be sure to pick it up.  “Find a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck.”  If the penny is tails up it means bad luck. This superstition is from ancient times when metals were believed to offer protection from evil.

Don’t Whistle Away Your Wealth:  Whistling inside your own home will lead to a loss of money and bring bad luck.  Don’t whistle inside someone else’s home either or you’ll whistle their money away too.  It is thought that whistling invites evil spirits into your home.  It okay to whistle outside though.
