In Taoist wisdom, it is believed that there are three friends in winter which actually describe
the characteristics of a successful person.  The first is the dignity of the pine tree, the second is the wisdom of the plum blossom and the third is the endurance of the bamboo.

Stand Tall and upright

A wise person remains accommodating, calm and relaxed no matter what the nature of a particular situation.  He (or she) never gets overwhelmed by small obstacles or even a great adversity.  According to Taoist precepts, it is this attitude that attracts the blessing of long life and good health.  This approach to life reminds us of the tall standing and upright pine tree that remains evergreen throughout the year.  The pine tree is unchanging in the summer sunshine or snows of winter.  This is the first friend of winter.

Survive the difficult times

The Wisdom of the Plum Blossom – Tranquility Leads to Determination
Despite misfortune, a wise person still continues to thrive like a plum blossom that blooms during the cold and dreary winter months.  This suggests a mind that is tranquil despite what is going on outside and around you.  Even in difficult times, you survive and continue to shine. This is the second friend of winter.
The Endurance of the Bamboo – Flexibility Means No Hostility
The bamboo is soft and flexible, yet at the same time it is strong and sturdy.  It can bend according to the prevailing winds and has the ability to adapt to a multitude of circumstances.  It is rarely “broken” and bounces back from bad times.  These characteristics, according to Taoist adepts, make this third friend in winter the most important of the three.  This flexible disposition introduces a positive attitude into every potentially hostile situation.
