The first thing to remember as you begin your practice, is that feng shui is both an art and a
science. You must take proper directions and yes, there will be some technical investigation and calculations. At the same time feng shui requires your instinctive choices as well. You will need to adapt the precepts of this classical and ancient practice to a modern environment. That’s why “theory” alone is not enough, nor is it a practical to approach your feng shui this way. You must develop your “feng shui eye” to modern living and adapt ancient guidelines to suit modern-day living and workspaces.
Before you start: Check the big picture. Standing at your main door and looking out, take photos to check for poison arrows and obstacles. Now FEEL the energy coming towards you – is it friendly, agitated or harmful? Knowing whether it is good energy, also known as sheng chi or shar chi (bad or dead chi) is critical since the front door where the energy enters is the “mouth” of the home.
Use a floor plan and superimpose lo shu grid and annual chart |
Clear clutter! I don’t know of any feng shui experts that would not agree with me about this. Clutter can severely block your luck, so this is one of the first things you must attend to. Your cleaning doesn’t have to be perfect, but you must remove anything that blocks the flow of energy and your good luck. Take a good look around and take a picture of each room – you can spot the blockages much more easily this way.
Never guess at directions – use proper compass |
Superimpose the Lo Shu Grid: Be sure to draw the lo shu grid or square over your floor plan so you can identify the compass directions of each corner of your home. If your home has an irregular shape, you should still superimpose the grid on your floor plan and for sure you will find missing and protruding corners. Don’t worry – feng shui provides a way to deal with things like this.
Space and Time Dimension: Both are important! This requires you to undertake an annual update to take care of your doors and rooms that are hurt by specific afflictions. Each year Jennifer and I spend an inordinate amount of time studying the feng shui of the upcoming year. We provide information on the auspicious and in auspicious sectors for buildings, houses and apartments to you at our annual feng shui extravaganzas as well as in our Fortune and Feng Shui books for each of the twelve horoscope signs.
Remember that stars (numbers) that fly into each sector bring significant transformations of luck – that can be good or bad. Updating your home annually ensures good feng shui for the next twelve months when done properly!
