Is Your Business Backwards?

One of the big reasons many people become entrepreneurs and business owners is freedom.

The freedom to be your own boss, set your own schedule, make your own decisions, and tailor your business to fit your lifestyle.

Unfortunately, many of us start out with it all backwards. We build a business, grow it, nurture it, make it successful… and then try to shoehorn our life in around it.

The problem is, a business is a great servant, but a very poor master.

If you don’t know exactly what your priorities, goals, and needs are, you may end up designing a business based on someone else’s expectations or what you see others doing.

And there’s no such thing as a “one size fits all” business.

The biggest misconception I hear time and again from new entrepreneurs is that they think they have to give up all the things that are important to them in order to be successful.

But here’s the good news: You can design your business around your goals and priorities.

Let’s say, your goal is to make your business part-time in order to nurture your very small children. While working part-time may not earn you millions and millions of dollars, you can actually reach 6-figures and beyond if you know what to do and have the right systems in place.

Some people say, “But I need to make a million dollars!” Really? I mean, there’s nothing wrong with making money – and lots of it. But is a million dollars what you really NEED?

Remember, money in and of itself is meaningless. It is the experiences that money can provide that are what you are really after.

What if all of your personal, business, and lifestyle goals were achievable and you were perfectly fulfilled, happy, and content without ever having a million dollar business? Would it really matter what the number is on your bank statement?

It’s so much more important to know what you want your business to provide for you – what will it allow you to do, be, have, or experience that you long for?

Try to remember what attracted you to owning your own business in the first place. I’m sure it wasn’t to work yourself to death to make money that you’ll never have time to enjoy.
