As the lunar New Year approaches, it’s time to start getting things cleaned up and to
declutter the rooms in your apartment, home and office. Sure, this isn’t the most exciting weekend activity, but there are some rather special benefits to be gained if you follow these steps:
1. Start by throwing out old things that are broken or chipped like teacups or serving platters – even if it has sentimental value or it was an old wedding gift. You may be like many people who hate to let go of things and it’s not unusual to resist doing this. It was hard for me too until I learned the secret of giving and began reaping the benefits of this good feng shui technique spiritually…and you can too.
2. Next to your wardrobe! Give away the clothing that is too big (or too small ha ha) for you – the things that no longer fit your body or your lifestyle! We have a lot of memories attached to our clothing, both good and bad, and these memories may no longer serve you.
3. Final step: This is the most difficult but will bring you great reward. Find something that you really love and give it away! Yes, it can be your favorite “anything” that means a lot to you – your favorite scarf, a special bag, a book, a bracelet. It doesn’t have to be expensive but it must be close to your heart. This is true generosity!
Now, about that secret. The reason we have such a hard time getting rid of things or giving them away is because we are “attached” to them – and attachment is a very negative habit. It’s also one that’s hard to break. When we are attached, we hang on to old things and unless we can let go of them, we are forever stuck and can never escape from our past. When we are stuck, our inner chi is also “stuck” and we stagnate in our lives, jobs and relationships.
Try these three decluttering suggestions as we enter the Year of the Earth Dog. I admit they are not easy but I promise you will feel more liberated than ever before. If you find yourself disagreeing with these suggestions, then ask yourself why. Believe me, your life and relationships will improve as you begin to step out of the past and into the future!
Here’s to a great start in the New Year!
