If you’ve ever wondered why the Chinese often display things in pairs, here’s why.
The Taoist concept of “double goodness” is that everything that brings good fortune and is auspicious is always more effective when shown as a pair. So placing auspicious items like elephants, wealth vases and even pieces of furniture is done to attract luck.
This also applies to protection. Fu dogs, Pi yaos, and Chi lins are traditional protectors that are widely used not only in homes but in offices, public places and restaurants. For effectiveness they are always placed in pairs – male and female, yin and yang and always flanking the door or entryway.
