Chi moves from one level of your home to next via the staircase. That’s why when your
staircase has good feng shui, it will distribute good fortune to the rest of the home. However, if it is bad from a feng shui perspective, it can cause illness, misfortune and robbery. People often forget about the staircase when making feng shui changes to the home so here are the ground rules for staircase feng shui:
No spiral staircases please |
2) Avoid spiral staircases as they resemble a corkscrew in the very heart of the home.
3) Your staircase should be solid -no bad fittings or creaky stairs.
4) The staircase should not have hollows or openings in the steps. This suggests a “leak”in the steps.
5) An auspicious staircase is wide and curves gracefully.
An auspicious staircase |
7) No red coloured carpets on the stairway as this brings severe misfortune.
8) No water features under the staircase as this affects the success potential of your children.
9) Your staircase should never start or end in the front of a toilet.
10) Do not have a staircase in the center of the home.
How to Protect and Improve Your Staircase:
- Hang a picture of a protector image such as Kuan Kung to create protective chi there or place a family photo there.
- Place a pair of fu dogs on either side of the stair so it will protect the bad energy from traversing the staircase and encourage good luck energy movement instead.
- Place a screen or divider between the stairway and main door if your staircase faces the main door directly. This blocks the energy and slows it down from moving too fast.
- Install a crystal chandelier at base of staircase.
- Your staircase can be made of wood, metal or concrete. Wooden staircases are best in the south, east and southeast; metal staircases are best in the north and concrete staircases work best in the northeast, southwest, west and northwest.
- If you have a narrow staircase, hang pictures or a mirror to improve the space visually. A staircase that is painted white works well if the area is narrow and seems cramped.
- Use soft and warm lights along the walls of the staircase if it is narrow to improve the flow of energy.
