3 Things Every Copywriter Needs to be Successful

People networking concept. Social media and internet and technology connectivity icons.
I’ve moved 23 times since I graduated from college. And I know I’ll have at least one more move in my future.

Thankfully, I’ve learned a lot about moving over the years. (Moving 23 times gives you ample opportunity to make mistakes you don’t want to repeat.)
For example, I use color-coded tape with room labels so it’s easy to see which boxes belong in Bedroom #1 and which ones go to the Kitchen.
I’ve learned the value of purging before you move so you’re not paying to move things you’ll end up donating or throwing out when you start unpacking.
But the most valuable lesson I’ve learned is to not try and do it alone.
And while you know you need help moving heavy and bulky furniture, it’s tempting to think you can handle the rest yourself — especially if your new home is nearby.
“I can move my hanging clothes myself in one carload.”
“The pictures on the wall are easy and will only take a few minutes.”
“There’s not that much in the garage … I can do it in a couple of hours.”
As you’ve probably already guessed, none of those statements ended up being true.
The truth is, doing it all yourself may seem less expensive, but it consumes the one resource you can’t replenish — time.
It’s the same way when we’re building our business.
Maybe we know we need a program to teach us a new skill but then we think we can figure everything else out ourselves.
And just like moving, you can. Unfortunately, you’ll pay a steep price in time and effort.
The good news is, there’s an easy solution … Community.
In a community, you’re never completely on your own. There’s always a helping hand when you need it.
Having strong connections to a copywriting community helps three ways …

1. Affirmation

Affirmation is such a deep human need, we often don’t even think about it … unless we can’t get it.
Imagine a client asks you to expand the scope of a project. Do you charge more or just do the additional work? Maybe you’ve been able to come up with a creative solution.
Wouldn’t you feel better if you could ask other copywriters if your proposed solution is reasonable before sending it to the client?
Or maybe your freelance website is about to go live … wouldn't it be nice to have someone review it and let you know everything looks good?
When you send out a proposal for a new copywriting project, would you feel more confident if your fellow copywriters said the price you were quoting was fair?
Many solo entrepreneurs get stuck, especially in the early stages of their business, because they lack the input they need from others.
Having someone there who can say, “you’re doing it right,” can make being a freelance copywriter much less scary.

2. Brainstorming

Have you ever noticed how your best ideas come when you’re talking with someone else?
She’ll say something and suddenly a light goes on. You get a breakthrough idea!
It’s why successful entrepreneurs surround themselves with other successful business owners.
There’s a magic that happens when a group of like-minded people get together to solve a problem. Because everyone has a different perspective, you get a variety of solutions, and can choose the best one.
Whether you’re stuck on a nailing down a Big Idea, need help with an email subject line, or want a new idea for marketing your business, having a community to help is a huge value.

3. Shared Knowledge

There are many big changes when you go from working in a corporate environment to being a solo entrepreneur.
One of them is the fact you and you alone have 100% of the knowledge in the business. It can be a limiting factor on your success.
For example, what happens when you run across something that you need to know, but don’t?
You can research the topic. You can go through training. Or, you can ask your community.
Chances are, someone in that community has the expertise to help you. Instead of spending a full day or more trying to get an answer, you can get it in minutes.
And it’s a wonderful feeling when you’re able to help out a fellow community member. It proves you do have valuable knowledge that others need!
Being a solo entrepreneur means you have complete control over the direction of your business.
It doesn’t mean you have to be alone.
That’s why B2B Writing Success connects you with other successful copywriters in a private Facebook community. Because together, the journey is easier and much more enjoyable.
