Selecting the Right Material for Garden Furniture: Your choice of the material of your
garden furniture depends on where you will place it according to the 5-Element theory. For example, if your patio is located in the north then it is auspicious if your furniture is primarily made of steel (metal element-colour white) that supports the water element of the north. It would be inauspicious to choose any earth element materials like stone or bricks or granite since earth destroys water according to the 5-element theory. If your furniture will be placed in the East sector of your garden, then wooden furniture painted black is a good choice since wood is the element of the east and the black colour represents water, the supportive element of wood. It would NOT be appropriate to choose steel furniture painted white, since metal kills wood in the 5-element theory.

Be sure to repair and/or replace broken furniture. Your garden furniture should complement the style and size of your garden – be sure there is enough room on your patio for the chi to flow easily between lounge chairs and tables.

Use of Water Features: The Chinese have used water as an ornamental feature in the garden as a critical component of feng shui to activate wealth and prosperity and you can too. Think about what you want to create that will fits well into the design of your garden – it may be a waterfall, a fountain, a fishpond or a natural cascade of water. Think of exactly what you want in terms of size, depth and shape and adjust its scale to fit your garden. It should not be too large and should fit naturally into the environment.

Note: Excessive water will turn the element against you and eliminate activation of wealth. You must create a good level of balance in the garden and make sure there is never an excess of any colour, shape, form or element.

The best location for your water feature if possible is in the NORTH sector of your garden. If you are planning to keep fish in your pond, be sure they are healthy, and water is always clean and clear. Turtles are also a nice addition.

Lighting Your Garden: Lights represent the fire element as well as YANG energy. When you are thoughtful and clever in your use of exterior lighting you can harness earth luck as well since lights attract energy from the earth. Garden lighting should be placed mainly in the SOUTH, NORTHEAST and SOUTHWEST sectors. This also enhances the reputation of the family and ensures the good reputation of those living in the home.
