This is one area of feng shui, your staircase energy, that is usually not given enough
attention. I am referring to how the chi moves from one level to the next in your home – your staircase lifts the energy from ground level to the upper levels of the home or office. Therefore, when the staircase has good feng shui, it brings good fortune to the rest of the home, and especially to where you rest and sleep since this is the time you are more vulnerable. Conversely, if your staircase is afflicted with bad feng shui, it can actually spread harmful energy bringing illness, robbery, burglary, betrayal and all kinds of misfortune. This is why it is so important to focus on the staircase.
Here are eight basic rules for good feng shui of your staircase:
- Never Face the Door – The top and bottom of the staircase should never face the door. The bottom staircase should not directly face the front door, so if the first thing you see when you enter the house is the staircase going straight up, this is an afflicted situation.
Staircase should not
face the door
Avoid spiral staircases |
- No to Spiral Staircases – Spiral staircases are like a corkscrew. If a spiral staircase is located in the center of the home, it’s like a corkscrew boring into the center of the heart of your home which is serious affliction so better not to buy a home or condo with this feature.
- Curved Staircases OK -A curved, wider staircase is very good because it causes the energy to move up or down slowly. Slow moving energy is always best as it allows the chi to meander. When it moves too fast (like in a straight line) it becomes a “poison arrow.”
- Staircases Should be Solid: The steps should be solid and not have open spaces between the steps because the wealth of the family flows out – the energy is escaping and leaking out – your wealth will leak out.
Use lots of lights |
- Keep Staircases Well-Lit – The landing (if you have one) should be well lit - when you have light here it brings yang energy. If you can have a light on each step it is very auspicious. You can also place a light at the bottom of the staircase to encourage the yang energy to flow upwards.
- Keep in Good Shape – Your staircases should not creak or have any broken boards or missing steps. They should be safe which means a bannister that is firm and secure. If you have carpets on your stairs (I prefer not to have them), but if you do, then use a neutral, earth tone colour.
- Under the Staircase – Do not place a water feature like a little fish pond, aquarium or fountain near or under your staircase as this afflicts the success of the next generation and is harmful to the children living in the house. Also do not put important things like your schoolbooks, important files etc. When you “walk over” them (as you climb the stairs) this is really bad feng shui. If you want to use this as your storage area, keep cleaning utensils, mops etc.
- Use Protective Images or Pictures – Place a protective image at the foot of the staircase just before it moves upward. – a small image or fu dogs will prevent wandering spirits and bad energy from going upstairs. The idea is to treat your staircase as an entryway to the upper part of the home.
